Episode 187 - Midnight Special

Welcome back to Not A Bomb podcast! This is the show where we go back and re-examine some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history and see if they deserve a second chance. On this episode, we keep the sci-fi training rolling as we discuss 2016’s Midnight Special. This film highlights why the sci-fi genre can be so enthralling and is one of our favorite genres to discuss. Even though critics seemed to adore this little movie, Midnight Special didn’t get much attention from the general public when it released in theaters. Trust us, Midnight Special has amazing worldbuilding, interesting characters, thrilling action set pieces, oscar caliber performances, and so much more. WARNING…if you are interested in the film, and you should be, just know that we discuss the ending and it’s possible meanings.

Midnight Special is directed by Jeff Nichols and stars Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Durst, Adam Driver, Jaeden Martell, and Sam Shepard.

Episode 186 - Prospect

Happy New Year film fans! On the first episode of 2024, we are ringing in the new year with a discussion of one of the more recent underseen science fiction films - Prospect. Made for roughly $4 million, Prospect, could be best described as a sci-fi/western, with fantastic world building and powerful performances. Sadly, with even a tiny budget, Prospect failed to make an impact at the box office. Thankfully, Vinegar Syndrome released an amazing 4K edition complete with some amazing special features. With the help of this podcast, maybe Prospect will find a second life. Also, we spend a little time talking about our listeners’ choices for the best/worst films of 2023.

Prospect is directed by Zeek Earl and Chris Caldwell and stars Pedro Pascal, Sophie Thatcher, and Jay Duplass.

Episode 185 - Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre and Guy Ritchie's The Covenant

As the end of 2023 approaches, Not A Bomb has decided to go out with a bang. On this week’s show, we discuss not one but two bombs by the same director, Guy Ritchie. This was a rough year at the box office for Mr. Ritchie. Both Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre and Guy ritchie’s The Covenant didn’t make their production budget back during their theatrical run. Critics definately liked one movie over the other. And audiences, who did see the films, liked both.

We couldn’t take on two films in one show without some help. Nate, friend and family member, jumps on to share his thoughts on Guy Ritchie’s filmography and help us decide if these two films deserve more attention.

If that wasn’t enough, we also reveal our 5 best and worst films of the year. Brad followed the instructions. Troy did his own thing. Nate gives everybody a shock with his take on Jackie Chan’s Ride On. You are going to get a lot of recommendations from these lists!

We also want to take a minute and thank all of you for an amazing year and all of the wonderful support. We are truly humbled by our community and appreciate all the feedback.

Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre is directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza, Josh Harnett, Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone, Eddie Marsan, and Hugh Grant.

Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant is directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Dar Salim, Antony Starr, Alexander Ludwig, Emily Beecham, and Jonny Lee Miller.

Also, this is the last week to let Not A Bomb know your best/worst films of 2023. Head over to Not A Bomb and submit your choice!
